Review: The Ordinary Caffeine Solution 5% + EGCG

Reduces Appearance of Eye Contour Pigmentation and of Puffiness
This light-textured formula contains an extremely high 5% concentration of caffeine, supplemented with highly-purified Epigallocatechin Gallatyl Glucoside (EGCG) from green tea leaves. Independent studies have shown that topical use of each of caffeine and EGCG can help reduce looks of puffiness and of dark circles in the eye contour. Additional studies have shown that caffeine can also reduce the appearance of cellulite. The Ordinary Website

EGCG (EpigalloCatechin Gallate) is one of green tea most active molecule. It is well known to have one of the most powerful free radical scavenging among phytochemicals, and possesses anti-inflammatory action on the skin, and most importantly has an inhibitory action on collagenase, thereby preventing wrinkles formation.

Common causes of dark circles under the eyes include:

  • Heredity. Dark circles under the eyes can appear in childhood, and are often an inherited trait. Some children will outgrow them, but others will not.
  • Allergies. Nasal congestion can dilate the blood vessels that drain from the area around your eyes, causing them to darken.
  • Sleep deprivation is the most common cause, and the easiest to prevent, but …
  • Oversleeping can also cause dark eye circles.
  • Stress
  • As we get older, our skin becomes thinner.
  • Iron deficiency can prevent the blood from carrying sufficient oxygen to eye tissues.

Review

I’ve had dark circles for as long as I can remember and I’m pretty sure I had it since before I was 10 years old. Yes, that young and no, I’m not exaggerating. So it was pretty clear that I inherited the dark circles from my parents (specifically my mum 😉).

Having said that, I’m not depressed by it or anything. Nothing a little concealer can’t help right. Even when I’m not wearing any makeup, I feel totally 'normal-looking' with my dark circles.

So I was on Youtube back in June, browsing through new videos and chanced upon reviews on The Ordinary Skincare. They have an extensive line of skincare products that targets various skin issues with no frills, no gimmicks, just active ingredients working for you – kind of concept.

Immediately I was curious about the brand because I’m all for no frills, just give me what works. To cut the long story short, I bought a bunch of products to try. Honestly I haven’t got around into trying all of them because it’s not ideal to switch up your skincare routine 180 degrees without knowing what exactly works and what doesn’t.

Just for today, I want to talk a little bit more about the Caffeine Solution 5% + EGCG.
I had been religiously using the Caffeine Solution for my undereyes since late June when I received it in the mail and it wasn’t after my New Zealand Road Trip that I realised that my dark circles has visibly diminished quite a fair bit!

Consistency:         Light-weight
Texture:                 Liquid form, non-sticky
Does it affect makeup application? No.

*I didnt have a photo that shows my circles before the application but the 2016 shot is pretty much where I was.

Needless to say, I was super excited about the result and can’t wait to share with you!

Left: Photo from November 2016
Right: Photo from August 2017

2016: Dark circles shaped like an inverted semi-circle
2017: 3 months of consistent use of the product, my dark circles faded to more of an inverted triangle shape

I am impressed! 😍
